The interface is set against a black background and features labels and numerical indicators to assist in precise adjustments.
Leslie’s Sanford Reverb

Sanford reverb is a good choice for those who love a dense reverb effect with high sound quality. It’s able to emulate large cavernous spaces with ease and has 20 presets for you to get started. These include the generic room reverbs such as small, large & hall. I was surprised see the addition of an Early Reflections section in a free reverb effect! No complaints, this feature allows you to add greater detail and simulation of spaces, it also allows you to pan and mix the reflections for even more spacial control. If you like to get creative with your reverb settings there is a modulation section and also freeze functionality. Great!

TAL Reverb III

Tal reverb 4 is an emulation of the old vintage reverb units. It combines fast build up times with long reverb tails to recreate the classic vintage modulated reverb sound. It provides you with a low and hi filter cut and two signal mix knobs (Wet & Dry). This last feature really adds to the flexibility of the unit for those that like to automate their reverbs. Mixing the wet & dry signals can create some really interesting blends of reverb and distance to add character to your mixes. Tal reverb 4 only works with stereo channels. This is a really popular free reverb vst plugin.

  • Very diffuse sound.
  • Fast build up time, also with long reverb sounds.
  • Works on almost every audio material.
  • Easy to use.

Glaceverb

The digital interface of the GlaceVerb audio plugin by Dasample features a blue screen that presents various adjustable settings such as modulation, absorption, and density. Below this display, controls are available for size, bass, dry levels, and wet levels.
DaSample Glaceverb – Free Reverb Plugin

Glace Verb is a unique reverb that is designed to offer you a little something different. Rather than the normal presets found on a unit, Glaceverb offers you presets that can model acoustic spaces and surfaces. The Residual Vector Modulation (RVM) algorithm allows Glaceverb to emulate a signal’s reverberation through water as well as the vibrations of a surface when hit by the signal. This means you can adjust the density, reabsorption, texture, reflection characteristics of your sound, making it a extremely flexible. The 64 presets also provide you with ‘final mix’ modes or ‘transparent’ presets for mastering. Great for those that like to explore sound design.

Features

  • Residual Vector Modulation (RVM) reverberation engine.
  • Reverberation time : up to 20s.
  • Improved reflections algorithms for more natural sounding.

Abletunes Knobs

Displaying three vertical dials labeled "Attack Knob," "Drive Knob," and "Space Knob," each with Abletunes branding, the image features large metallic dials with colored lights around their edges (red, yellow, blue respectively) and appears to be part of music production gear.
Abletunes Knobs

I love knobs! Abletunes Knobs gives us three of them. This is an easy to use subtle reverb that provides precision over mid sized spaces. The Attack knob is a simple transient shaper (stereo) which helps to enhance percussive transients and solidify instrument solos. This can provide a little more ‘bite’ and ‘edge’ to your drums, especially when you engage the Drive knob. The Drive knob provides wide-band distortion which adds a nice bit of colouration and grit to your busses (or any channel!). Abletunes suggest automating the ON/OFF on the Drive knob for chopping pulsation, or automating it’s level on transients.
The Space knob will create reverbs between small halls and large rooms which will add natural character to your synths, percussion or guitars. All this in 3 knobs.

Features

  • Attack – Transient Shaper
  • Space – Reverb Time
  • Drive – Distortion
  • ON/OFF switches on each knob

Available for Windows.

DX Reverb Light

DX Reverb Light is a flexible reverb that allows you to produce high-quality natural sound in various rooms of various sizes and dimensions. The plugins flexibility allows you to create fast attacks for small rooms and to also edit the colouration characteristics of the rooms. The makers call it the ‘ultimate free’ reverb plugin, you decide.

Roboverb

A digital interface with a control panel labeled "ROBOVERB" showcases two rotary knobs named "Wet" and "Dry," along with three additional rotary knobs for controlling "Room Size," "Damping," and "Width." The setup also includes a circular speaker and a grid of 12 toggle switches each labeled as "Chambers.
Roboverb

Roboverb is a creative Shroeder style reverb that makes quick experimentation easy. A Shroeder reverb contains a series of connected all pass filters and a parrallel bank of feedback comb filters. These filters are present for use in the Chambers section. This is the section that stands out, you can quickly turn filters on and off to create springy, delayed, flanging “robot” sounds. The changes are often not subtle, so can provide some accidental discoveries. If you like mangling drums and getting creative with delays this plugin would be a nice choice for heavy automation. Check out the video below for some audio examples.

 Features

  • Shroeder Reverb
  • 8 Comb Filters
  • 4 All pass filters
  • Chamber section with On/Off control

Available for Windows & Mac.

Gigaverb – Free Reverb Plugin

Gigaverb by Elements is a simple reverb based on the open source Gverb code (get that here). The code has been modified to create extremely long decay times. You may struggle to use this as your default reverb as some of the decay times are so long (minutes long tails!). I think Gigaverb is more suitedas a special effect for expansive spaces or creating immersive sound design. A port of the original Gverb is also available for free on the Elements site. I have also included a link to a Gigaverb/Sadeharju by Juhana Sadeharju for Max For Live.

Available for Windows & Mac.

Semantic Audio’s Safe Reverb

The user interface of an audio reverb plugin from Semantic Audio boasts various knobs to adjust parameters such as Dense, Damp, Decay, BWidth (Bandwidth), Size, PreDly (Pre-Delay), Gain, Dry/Wet mix, and Early/Late reflections. Additionally, it includes buttons for Save and Load functionality. The logo prominently reads "SemanticAudio Reverb".
Semantic Audio’s Safe Reverb

This is Black Mirror does plugins. Safe Reverb allows you to type a semantic description of the timbre such as ‘warm’, ‘long’ or ‘vibrant’ into the text field. The parameters will then change to represent the request. The plugin uploads the audio data to the semantic servers where it is analysed to create a series of ‘semantic plugin settings’ from multiple users. Semantic Audio developed this concept as they felt that you shouldn’t have to adjust your reverb effects to attain a certain sound. I think this is a good entry for producers who want to learn what settings would provide different reverb types.

Smarteletronicx Ambience Reverb – Free Reverb Plugin

Smart Electronix Ambience serves up a healthy dose of BIG sounds and LARGE spaces. It has been around for a while and I’ve used it in a few of my productions when I wanted to create expansive spaces (diffusion!). I think it rivals the quality and sound design of the very best commercial reverbs on the market.

As well as the normal reverb types it features a gating section and hold functionality if you want to experiment.  One of the more advanced controls is the variation button, this creates a variant of the same room allowing you to subtly test different reverberation modes if a particular frequency is problematic. Smart Electronix easily beats some commercial reverb plugins out there.

Features

  • Diffusion
  • EQ Section
  • Gating Section
  • Damping Section
  • Quality control
  • Pre-Delay
  • Width

Try online preset exchange with u-He Protoverb

Protoverb is a brilliant concept by u-He. They’ve made their new experimental room reverb simulator available as a researchware plugin. This allows us to test it out whilst they receive data and feedback from the music production community! Clever. The concept of Protoverb is unlike most reverb plugins as it builds up as many room resonances to model the body of air in the room. This results in some natural sounding reverbs with interesting characters. The reverb algorithms work with an array of networked parallel and serial delays that have no structure or mathematical formula. This means the Protoverb generates random delays which may or may not sound amazing. There is an element of luck and randomness about it – which adds to the fun! Of course, if you find an amazing setting u-He would like you to send it them.

Cloud seed

Cloudseed is like getting a free version of Eventide Blackhole or Valhalla Shimmer. It’s an algorithmic reverb designed to emulate huge endless spaces and modualted echoes. The algorithm used is based on the Manu classic reverb units from the 80’s. Rather than a natural sounding reverb this plugin is more suited to being a special effect / sound design tool.

Available for Windows & Mac.

Abstract Chamber

Abstract Chamber is another good experimental room reverb. It attempts to provide natural, longer sounding reverbs that can be modulated. The modulation controls the depth and rate of internal modulation of the reverb time (RT60). The RT60 calculation used is a theoretical mid-frequency of the emulated room acoustics – now you know! Also features an “Insert/Send” mode which is handy.

Features

  • Pre Delay
  • Lo / Hi Frequency Dampening
  • Insert / Send modes
  • Modulation

Available for Windows.
