The Best Free Reverb VST Plugins:
Valhalla Supermassive - Best free reverb plugin
Supermassive is absolutely amazing! I use it a lot in my music production for its amazing sound quality and sound design potential. It really excels at creating really big lush reverbs. For a freeware reverb VST it sounds so rich and deep. Supermassive was designed to create expansive delays and reverbs, which it does flawlessly. It features some great presets and a really user friendly interface. I think it’s as good as Valhalla’s paid plugins, one of the best free reverb plugins out there, just go and download it! Check out the video below for more info.
- Amazing Delay & Reverb modess
- feedback delay networks
- different algorithms have very different attack, sustain, and decay characteristics
- Delay Warp Mod controls

Convology XT is an impulse response convolution reverb. Impulse Record have emulated over 126 pieces of vintage studio outboard gear, making 2,965 presets! The free plugin version provides you with 70 presets to try out. (You can buy more impulse responses if you wish). Convology comes with a stereo modulator chorus that emulates an early DSP reverb effect. This can also be used as a chorus/ flanger. One of the best convolution freeware plugins. Check out the video below for more info.
- zero latency (they claim!)
- scale functions of stretch and decay
- stereo modulator
- Stereo 3D chorusing
- stereo width from mono to “outside your speakers”

Sanford reverb is a good choice for those who love a dense reverb effect with high sound quality. It’s able to emulate large cavernous spaces with ease and has 20 presets for you to get started. These include the generic room reverbs such as small, large & hall. I was surprised see the addition of an Early Reflections section in a free reverb effect! No complaints, this feature allows you to add greater detail and simulation of spaces, it also allows you to pan and mix the reflections for even more spacial control. If you like to get creative with your reverb settings there is a modulation section and also freeze functionality. Great!
- MIDI learn,
- Early Reflections
- Time controls
- Damp controls,
- Freeze Setting
Windows 64 / 32 bit.

TAL Reverb III & 4 v 2.0
Tal reverb 4 is an emulation of the old vintage reverb units. It combines fast build up times with long reverb tails to recreate the classic vintage modulated reverb sound. It provides you with a low and hi filter cut and two signal mix knobs (Wet & Dry). This last feature really adds to the flexibility of the unit for those that like to automate their reverbs. Mixing the wet & dry signals can create some really interesting blends of reverb and distance to add character to your mixes. Tal reverb 4 only works with stereo channels. This is a really popular free reverb vst plugin.
- Modulated vintage reverb sound.
- Very diffuse sound.
- Fast build up time, also with long reverb sounds.
- Works on almost every audio material.
- Easy to use.
- Only stereo channels supported.
Togu Audio Line (TAL) also offer other reverb plugins TAL 2 and 3. TAL III has a rather distinctive plate reverb & diffuse sound and provides 10 presets that allow ‘Room size’ and ‘Stereo width’ control.
Available for Mac & Windows.
Glace Verb is a unique reverb that is designed to offer you a little something different. Rather than the normal presets found on a unit, Glaceverb offers you presets that can model acoustic spaces and surfaces. The Residual Vector Modulation (RVM) algorithm allows Glaceverb to emulate a signal’s reverberation through water as well as the vibrations of a surface when hit by the signal. This means you can adjust the density, reabsorption, texture, reflection characteristics of your sound, making it a extremely flexible. The 64 presets also provide you with ‘final mix’ modes or ‘transparent’ presets for mastering. Great for those that like to explore sound design.
- Residual Vector Modulation (RVM) reverberation engine.
- Reverberation time : up to 20s.
- Improved reflections algorithms for more natural sounding.
- Surface parameters (Texture, Absorption, Reflection).
- Density control (from Flat to Extreme reverberation).
- Size, Bass, Dry and Wet quick access controls.
- Very easy to use and ultra functional interface with large LCD screen.
- All functions and controls are fully automatable.
- 64 hi-quality presets.
I love knobs! Abletunes Knobs gives us three of them. This is an easy to use subtle reverb that provides precision over mid sized spaces. The Attack knob is a simple transient shaper (stereo) which helps to enhance percussive transients and solidify instrument solos. This can provide a little more ‘bite’ and ‘edge’ to your drums, especially when you engage the Drive knob. The Drive knob provides wide-band distortion which adds a nice bit of colouration and grit to your busses (or any channel!). Abletunes suggest automating the ON/OFF on the Drive knob for chopping pulsation, or automating it’s level on transients.
The Space knob will create reverbs between small halls and large rooms which will add natural character to your synths, percussion or guitars. All this in 3 knobs.
- Attack – Transient Shaper
- Space – Reverb Time
- Drive – Distortion
- ON/OFF switches on each knob
DX Reverb Light
DX Reverb Light is a flexible reverb that allows you to produce high-quality natural sound in various rooms of various sizes and dimensions. The plugins flexibility allows you to create fast attacks for small rooms and to also edit the colouration characteristics of the rooms. The makers call it the ‘ultimate free’ reverb plugin, you decide.
- true stereo reverbs that will not affect stereo imaging
- 64bit internal precision
- 24bit/96Khz audio support
- highly optimized DSP code
- ultra clean and noiseless processing
- factory presets
- parameter automation (depending on the host application)
- stereo output (mono->stereo, stereo->stereo)
Roboverb is a creative Shroeder style reverb that makes quick experimentation easy. A Shroeder reverb contains a series of connected all pass filters and a parrallel bank of feedback comb filters. These filters are present for use in the Chambers section. This is the section that stands out, you can quickly turn filters on and off to create springy, delayed, flanging “robot” sounds. The changes are often not subtle, so can provide some accidental discoveries. If you like mangling drums and getting creative with delays this plugin would be a nice choice for heavy automation. Check out the video below for some audio examples.
- Shroeder Reverb
- 8 Comb Filters
- 4 All pass filters
- Chamber section with On/Off control
Gigaverb by Elements is a simple reverb based on the open source Gverb code (get that here). The code has been modified to create extremely long decay times. You may struggle to use this as your default reverb as some of the decay times are so long (minutes long tails!). I think Gigaverb is more suitedas a special effect for expansive spaces or creating immersive sound design. A port of the original Gverb is also available for free on the Elements site. I have also included a link to a Gigaverb/Sadeharju by Juhana Sadeharju for Max For Live.
Voxengo’s Oldskool Verb is a musical sounding reverb providing 5 reverb modes – Slapback, Reverse, Deep, Old and Plus. It is backed with usual features including a three-band EQ, space & width. Deep in the depths of Belgium lives the brain behind MuTools. MuTools have provided the music production community with the Mu Lab and MUX modular plugins (also free plugins). MuVerb is part of the MUX world, but can be downloaded separately. It is a simple yet great reverb sound. Check out the demo below:
Variety Of Sound's epicVerb
A lot of these free algorithmic reverbs create majestic ambient spaces. What if you want smaller, tighter reverbs? Variety of Sound’s epicVerb offers you just that. As well as the standard fair of ambience effect simulation epicVerb can create tight sounding small rooms for vocal and drum channels. It gives you two reverberation modes (ambience and reverb effects) and six stereo early reflection models. The reverb section offers a range of sounds from ‘concrete or even edgy up to smooth, transparent and artifact free reverb tails’. As well as standard controls you can modulate the reverb tail and early reflections.
- Plate, room, Reflex, Echo and hall reverb sound
- Early Reflections Time & Level control
- Reverb / Ambience modes
Semantic Audio’s Safe Reverb
This is Black Mirror does plugins. Safe Reverb allows you to type a semantic description of the timbre such as ‘warm’, ‘long’ or ‘vibrant’ into the text field. The parameters will then change to represent the request. The plugin uploads the audio data to the semantic servers where it is analysed to create a series of ‘semantic plugin settings’ from multiple users. Semantic Audio developed this concept as they felt that you shouldn’t have to adjust your reverb effects to attain a certain sound. I think this is a good entry for producers who want to learn what settings would provide different reverb types.
Synthescience’s Freeze Chamber
Freezechamber is a standard reverb processor with a freeze preset. Nice and simple. The FREEZE state pushes the wet signal into a ‘suspended state’
Available for Windows.

Smarteletronicx Ambience Reverb
Smart Electronix Ambience serves up a healthy dose of BIG sounds and LARGE spaces. It has been around for a while and I’ve used it in a few of my productions when I wanted to create expansive spaces (diffusion!). I think it rivals the quality and sound design of the very best commercial reverbs on the market.
As well as the normal reverb types it features a gating section and hold functionality if you want to experiment. One of the more advanced controls is the variation button, this creates a variant of the same room allowing you to subtly test different reverberation modes if a particular frequency is problematic. Smart Electronix easily beats some commercial reverb plugins out there.
- EQ Section
- Gating Section
- Damping Section
- Quality control
Denis Tihanov Oril River v2.02
OrilRiver by Denis Tihanov provides a great sounding free algorithmic stereo reverb with low CPU usage. This plugin focuses on doing quality reverb well, no experimental extras. It provides you all the expected room sizes, 3-band EQ, damping control and decay time of early reflections. A straight forward, solid offering with great sound quality. Often thought of as one of the best free reverb plugins out there.
- 12 Variations of the Early Reflection
- 3 band EQ Section
- Gating Section
- Sample Rates 44,100Hz to 192,000Hz
- Two graphical interfaces
- 36 Presets
Protoverb is a brilliant concept by u-He. They’ve made their new experimental room reverb simulator available as a researchware plugin. This allows us to test it out whilst they receive data and feedback from the music production community! Clever. The concept of Protoverb is unlike most reverb plugins as it builds up as many room resonances to model the body of air in the room. This results in some natural sounding reverbs with interesting characters. The reverb algorithms work with an array of networked parallel and serial delays that have no structure or mathematical formula. This means the Protoverb generates random delays which may or may not sound amazing. There is an element of luck and randomness about it – which adds to the fun! Of course, if you find an amazing setting u-He would like you to send it them.
Cloud Seed by Low Profile
Cloudseed is like getting a free version of Eventide Blackhole or Valhalla Shimmer. It’s an algorithmic reverb designed to emulate huge endless spaces and modualted echoes. The algorithm used is based on the Manu classic reverb units from the 80’s. Rather than a natural sounding reverb this plugin is more suited to being a special effect / sound design tool.
Dead Duck Reverb
Dead Duck is a low CPU algorithmic reverb with pre-delay and input filtering. It’s fairly standard setup with knobs to adjust Room Size, dampening, width and wet/dry mix. The input filtering offers the basic low and high cut knobs. It’s presented on a fairly straight forward rack style interface, for light CPU use.
Reverb Solo by Acon Digital
Reverb Solo is a collaboration between the music retail site and Acon Digital. A simple one knob design makes it a quick and easy addition to get reverb sounds on any dry signal. The plugins effects ranges from small, bright and short to dark, long, deep and spacey.
Abstract Chamber is another good experimental room reverb. It attempts to provide natural, longer sounding reverbs that can be modulated. The modulation controls the depth and rate of internal modulation of the reverb time (RT60). The RT60 calculation used is a theoretical mid-frequency of the emulated room acoustics – now you know! Also features an “Insert/Send” mode which is handy.
- Pre Delay
- Lo / Hi Frequency Dampening
- Insert / Send modes
Available for Windows.

Dragonfly Reverb is based on the Freeverb 3 Hibiki stereo reverb algorithm which sounds absolutely gorgeous. Features include Small, Medium and Large Halls, Studio and Room reverb modes. Predelay, EQ, Size and width as well as a diffuse section with Spin and Wander functionality.
A great-sounding stereo reverb effect that compares well to some of the greatest commercial reverbs available. One of the best freeware reverb plugins.
Ambient Reverb by Stone Voices
Like Stars of the Lid? Love ambient soundscapes? Ambient Reverb has been designed just for that. Built as a tool for making ambient music it features long decay times of upto 100 seconds, freeze functionality, damping and a 2-band parametric EQ. The unit provides luscious, natural open spaces. This should be called an ‘ambience plugin’! A drone heads dream.

Riviera by NuSpace Audio
Fancy a convolution/algorithmic reverb combo? Riviera does just that. Combining both two reverberation modes Riviera delivers very realistic spring, room and plate reverb. Nuspace have named the main parameters of the plugin “Vooms”. The 5 Vooms allow you control of reflection, size, offset and volume of the reverbs. There is also a frequency decay control which allows you to adjust the decay time for different frequency bands. This is useful if you want to preserve the bottom end of a reverb tail but don’t want to cut it with EQ.
- Voom designer:
Adjustable number of dimensions, size, listener offset from sound-source origin, and material reflection dB loss
- Time controls: Adjust pre-delay, Impulse Responses onset/reverser, geometry scale/density sampling, and dimensional attenuation
- Frequency controls: Low and high frequency dampening, low-cut linear phase filter
- Stereo controls: Pan, Haas, phase, mix (wet/dry), mid/side (mono to difference), and gain
- Graphical user interface: Real-time displays to IR and spectrogram
- High performance: Low-latency & low CPU usage convolution algorithm, variable max FFT block size, multi-threading support for computing IRs in the background
