FAQ

Are music production courses worth it?

Yes. If you really want to learn music production then an online music production course will really speed things up for you. Most of the courses listed above are taught by electronic music producers who have had great success with their own music. Why not learn music production from the best? You will improve your creative process so much quicker having an industry professional teach you.

How long does it take to learn music production?

This depends on how much time you are able to apply to learning and the type of learning you do. If you are only able for a few hours a week and teach yourself with the the odd Youtbe tutorial then you will take many years to improve. However, you will learn a lot faster with the structure and guidance of a course. I think it’s reasonable to say that after a year of learning and practice you will see a significant jump in your ability to make music. It’s a skill that requires life long learning, you will always be getting better!

I broke this question down in much more detail in my article “How long does it take to learn music production“?

How to start learning music production?

The short answer is to find a DAW that you can afford, for example Fruity loops or Ableton Live Lite and learn that software. Start simple with an Ableton or Fruity loops intro course and then do a overview of music production course and build from there.
Alternatively you could start with a course that shows you how to make a track of your favourite genre. This will help you understand the whole production process from start to finish. What you first make may well be terrible! But that is OK!! It takes time.

Can I teach my self music production?

Yes. As mentioned above, you can teach yourself from Youtube, but it could take a while to gain any improvment. Or you can teach yourself with dedicated online courses for music production that really deep dive into making music and provide a solid foundation to work from.
